Father John's 50th Anniversary

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ordination of much-loved priest Father John Williams

The congregation was joined by family and friends who gathered in the village hall on 22nd December following a service of commemoration at which Father John presided, assisted by St. Anne’s Rector, Father Steve Davies. Gifts were then presented to him and his wife Judy.

Father John said, ‘I felt called to be ordained at 18 but, following advice, studied modern languages at Cardiff, taught briefly, eventually training to be a priest at Cuddesdon, Oxford and was ordained December, 1969. A first curacy in Morden was short. Having become engaged to choir member Judy Smith we decided to move to Yeovil to start married life. Our son Christopher was born there. After learning sign language I became a full-time chaplain to deaf people for five years.’

‘Following ten years as a vicar in Fareham, I was invited to be Rector at West Wittering and Birdham with Itchenor, so enjoyable that we stayed for seventeen years. Since retirement in 2011 I have reacquainted myself with playing the organ at St. Anne’s, leading the odd service and preaching from time to time.’
